Most Canadian canola meal is used for livestock feed

According to the Canola Council of Canada, canola is one of the country's most valuable field crops.

Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been cracking down on food safety. It's been preventing shipments of canola meal containing salmonella from crossing the border. This is causing problems for Canadian canola farmers and crushing plants, because they rely on the United States as their primary market for canola meal, which is used for livestock feed.

Capital News Online investigated further by contacting Dave Hickling, vice president of canola utilization at the Canola Council of Canada, Annie Savoie, acting national manager for biotechnology and microbiology at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and MP Alex Atamanenko, NDP critic for agriculture.
